Gangneung Travel Guide: Coffee, Beaches and Sunrise on the East Sea

Gangneung sits on the east coast of Gangwon Province, where the Taebaek Mountains drop to the sea. Pine forests back the beaches, a calm lagoon lies behind the sand, and the city has one of Korea's strongest cafe cultures. Weekend trips from Seoul are common, but three days fit easily.

We split the region into five areas. Gyeongpo & Chodang covers the lake, the main beach, Ojukheon House, Seongyojang Estate and the tofu restaurants. Anmok, Gangmun & Songjeong is the coffee strip and the quieter beaches around it. Downtown & Jungang Market is the practical center, with traditional markets, Wolhwa Street and the old lanes of Myeongju-dong. Jeongdongjin & Simgok, to the south, is about sunrise, a seaside train station, cliff trails and crab. Jumunjin, Yeongok & Sacheon, to the north, centers on the fish market, the lighthouse and small beaches.

Two food habits are worth knowing. Soft tofu here is made with seawater and eaten as a stew, often plain or with a spicy seafood twist. Raw fish is sold as a shared platter, so go with at least two people and ask the price before you sit down; at the market in Jumunjin you can pick your own fish and have it sliced. Coffee is not an add-on but a reason to come: pick a cafe with a sea view, take a cup to the breakwater, and visit a roastery if you have time.

Getting there is easy. The KTX runs from Seoul Station or Cheongnyangni Station to Gangneung Station in about two hours, and express buses from Seoul take longer. In town, local buses and taxis are reasonable, though the coast north and south of the center is better by taxi or rental car. Install Naver Map or Kakao Map, since Google Maps routing is limited in Korea.

Cherry blossoms around Gyeongpo Lake peak in early April, the beaches open for swimming in July and August, October brings the city's coffee festival, and winter offers cold, clear sunrises and snow crab. Prices, hours and bus routes change, so check close to your travel date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Seoul to Gangneung?

Take the KTX from Seoul Station or Cheongnyangni Station to Gangneung Station, which takes roughly two hours. Express buses from Seoul also run to Gangneung, but they take longer and depend on traffic. Check current schedules and fares, and reserve KTX seats in advance on weekends.

How many days do I need in Gangneung?

Two days is a comfortable minimum: one for the lake, Anmok and downtown, the other for Jeongdongjin or Jumunjin. A third day lets you add the second coastal area and a roastery without rushing. A day trip from Seoul is possible, but you will spend about four hours on the train.

Which is better, Gyeongpo or Anmok?

They suit different moods. Gyeongpo is the larger beach, with the lake, museums and soft tofu restaurants nearby, and it works well for families. Anmok is smaller and built around cafes, so it suits couples and anyone who wants to sit with a coffee by the sea. Most visitors see both in a single day, since they are about ten minutes apart by taxi.

What is the coffee street culture in Gangneung?

Anmok Coffee Street grew from a row of vending machines into dozens of cafes, many with sea views and in-house roasting. The routine is to buy a cup, walk the breakwater or beach, and then try another cafe. Gangneung also hosts a coffee festival each autumn; check the dates before you plan.

Is English widely spoken in Gangneung?

Less than in Seoul. Major sights and hotels often have basic English, but small restaurants and market stalls may not. Use Papago to translate menus, point at photos and carry some cash for markets. Asking your hotel to call ahead for crab or fish restaurants helps.
