Myeongju-dong Alley & Myeongju Art Madang 명주동 골목·명주예술마당
Gangneung · Downtown & Jungang Market · Sights
This old neighborhood has kept its small alleys, low wooden houses and colonial-era buildings, and a number of them now hold cafes, bakeries and craft stores. Wandering without a plan is the right approach: take a side lane, look at small shop windows, then stop in one of the converted homes for coffee. Myeongju Art Madang, set inside what used to be a school, has a spacious yard with benches and occasional exhibitions.
It is quieter than the more commercial coffee streets. Hours vary by shop, and some places close on a weekday.
It is a 10-minute taxi ride from Gangneung Station (강릉역); buses to the downtown area also stop nearby. Streets are narrow, so walk in.
