Gapyeong Travel Guide: How to Plan Korea's River Island Getaway
Gapyeong sits in the northeast of Gyeonggi Province, stretched along the Bukhan River and Cheongpyeong Lake. It is about an hour from Seoul, so a day trip is realistic, yet many visitors stay a night because the best sights are spread out. River islands such as Nami Island and Jarasum Island, European-style villages like Petite France, and forests such as the Garden of Morning Calm all lie within reach of each other, while the mountains to the north offer valleys and ridge trails.
We divide the county into five areas to keep each day compact. Gapyeong Town, Nami & Jara Islands is the liveliest, with the Nami ferry terminal, Jarasum, Rail Park and the town market. Cheongpyeong & Bukhan Riverside is the western gateway, with Cheongchun Station 1979, Homyeongho Lake and riverside cafes. Seorak & Cheongpyeong Lakeside holds Petite France, Edelweiss Swiss Theme Park and water sports. Jojong, Hyeonri & Myeongjisan is the northern mountain area, with Hyeondeungsa Temple and a suspension bridge. Sangmyeon, Morning Calm & Jat Hyanggi centers on the arboretum and the pine nut tofu restaurants.
Getting here is easiest by train. The Gyeongchun Line and the ITX-Cheongchun express run from Seoul to Gapyeong and Cheongpyeong stations in roughly an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the train. From Gapyeong Station you can walk or take a short taxi to the Nami ferry terminal, Jarasum and the market. For Petite France, the arboretum and the northern valleys a car or taxi is far more practical, because buses are infrequent. Install Naver Map or Kakao Map, which work better than Google Maps here, and use Papago for menus.
Season shapes the trip. April brings cherry blossoms along the country roads, summer is for valleys and lake sports, and late October is the peak for maples and ginkgo, when Jarasum also hosts its jazz festival. Winter offers snow around Homyeongho Lake and a light festival at the arboretum. Weekdays are calmer, and hours change, so verify them before you travel.
