SightsHistory & palacesOutdoor

This was the local government complex for the Gangneung region in Joseon times, and a few of its buildings still stand in a quiet courtyard in the city center. The standout is the Imyeonggwan gate, a large wooden structure registered as a national treasure, with a graceful roofline and strong, plain beams. Plan about half an hour to walk the grounds.

It is a calm spot for photos, especially on bright mornings, and it makes a gentle contrast with the busy markets close by. English signage may be limited, so read the boards on site or use a translation app.

Getting there

It is about 10 minutes by taxi from Gangneung Station (강릉역), or walk from the market area. Nearby parking is limited.
