The little station sits so close to the water that you can hear waves from the platform, which is why it became a symbol of Korea's east coast after a popular drama filmed here. A pebbly beach lies just across the tracks, and in winter the sunrise crowd gathers along it before dawn with hot drinks. During the day the mood is gentler: restaurants and cafes sit around the station, and trains come and go along the shore.

Sand Clock Park stands on the bluff nearby. Arrive early on holidays and January 1, when sunrise visitors fill the beach.

Getting there

From Gangneung Station (강릉역) take a regional train on the Donghae line to Jeongdongjin Station (정동진역), a short ride; check timetables, as trains are not frequent. Buses and taxis also run.
