Yeosu Travel Guide: Night Sea, Cable Cars and South Coast Islands

Yeosu is a port city on Korea's southern coast, and its fame rests on the glow of the harbor after dark. A Korean pop song about the city's night sea made the waterfront a pilgrimage for couples, and the 2012 World Expo left a modern waterfront by the train station. Away from the lights, the city is also a seafood capital: marinated raw crab, sliced raw flatfish salad, grilled cutlassfish and a pungent mustard-leaf kimchi from Dolsan Island all show up on set meals here.

We group the sights into five areas. Old Downtown, Isunsin Square & Nangman Pocha is the compact harbor core, with the hillside mural lane, Jinnamgwan Hall and rows of open-air tent bars facing the water. Odongdo, Expo Site & Manseongri holds the camellia islet, the aquarium and art museum, the Big-O fountain show and a black sand beach. Dolsan Island & Hyangiram stretches from the Dolsan Bridge viewpoint to a cliffside temple at the island's southern tip. Soho & Ungcheon is the quieter marina side, with a lit boardwalk and a waterfront park. Southern Islands & Coast covers the Geumodo cliff trail, Nangdo and Baegyado, which need a ferry, car or taxi.

Most visitors arrive on the KTX high-speed train from Seoul. The ride from Yongsan or Seoul stations to Yeosu-Expo Station (여수엑스포역) takes roughly three hours, and the station sits beside the Expo grounds and a short taxi from downtown. Inside the city, taxis are inexpensive, but the southern islands and Hyangiram are much easier with a rental car or taxi. Google Maps routing is limited in Korea, so install Naver Map or Kakao Map and use Papago for menus.

Season changes the plan. Winter brings camellias on Odongdo and crisp sunrise views at Hyangiram. Spring is calm and ideal for island walks, summer is hot so evenings by the water work best, and autumn brings clear skies and fall seafood. Big-O shows and ferries depend on season and weather. Prices and hours change, so check close to your dates and carry some cash.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Yeosu from Seoul?

The easiest way is the KTX from Yongsan Station to Yeosu-Expo Station (여수엑스포역), which takes roughly three hours; check Korail for current schedules and book seats in advance on holidays. Buses are slower and go to the Yeosu bus terminal. From the station, downtown and the Expo site are a short taxi ride, and Odongdo is walkable.

How many days do I need in Yeosu?

Two days is a good minimum: one for the Expo area, Odongdo, the cable car and the night sea, and one for Dolsan Island and Hyangiram. Three days gives time for the Soho marina side or a ferry to Geumodo. A day trip from Seoul is possible but tiring, because the train ride alone takes several hours each way.

Where is the best place to see the night sea and Busker Street?

Start at Jongpo Marine Park and walk to the red lighthouse, then continue to Isunsin Square, where buskers often perform on weekend evenings. Nangman Pocha Street has open-air tents with seafood, and Dolsan Park gives a view of the lit bridge. The Big-O show at the Expo site runs on certain dates in season, so verify the schedule.

Can I visit islands like Odongdo and Dolsan?

Yes. Odongdo is joined to the mainland by a breakwater you can walk or ride by train. Dolsan Island is reached by bridge, by taxi or by cable car, and it has Hyangiram temple, the bridge viewpoint and coastal cafes. For Geumodo and Nangdo you need a ferry or a car, and boat service depends on the weather.

Is English spoken, and can I use a foreign card?

English is limited outside the tourist facilities, but the Expo attractions, trains and larger hotels usually cope with it. Restaurants often have Korean-only menus, so use Papago and point. Major cards work in most restaurants and ticket offices, while market stalls, pocha tents and island eateries may prefer cash, so keep small notes.
