Tongyeong Travel Guide: Murals, Cable Car and Admiral Yi's Sea
Tongyeong is a port city on Korea's southern coast, and its charm comes from the way hills, harbor and islands overlap. Painted lanes climb above the fishing boats, a long cable car lifts you onto a ridge with islands scattered in every direction, and a short ferry crosses to Hansando, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin directed one of his best-known sea victories. The city is also known for its food: oysters, abalone, fresh fish, and a small sweet dough ball called honey bread.
We group the sights into four areas. Old Town, Gangguan & Dongpirang is the walkable core, with the harbor, the mural villages, Sebyeongwan Hall, the market and the DPIRANG night show. Mireuk Island & Cable Car holds the cable car, the summit trail, temples, the undersea tunnel and a cluster of seafood and coffee spots. Sanyang Coast & Dalah Park is a scenic drive with beaches, island cruises and the best sunset in town. Yi Sun-sin Park & Hansando covers the waterfront park, the lacquer museum and the ferry trip to Jeseungdang.
Tongyeong has no train station, so most visitors arrive by express bus. From Seoul, buses run to Tongyeong Intercity Bus Terminal in roughly four hours, and from Busan's Seobu terminal in around two. From the terminal, city buses and taxis reach the harbor in about ten minutes. The old town is walkable, but the cable car, Sanyang coast and Hansando ferry are easier by taxi or rental car, and some island sailings run only a few times a day. Google Maps is limited in Korea, so install Naver Map or Kakao Map and use Papago to translate menus.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with cool air and clear views from Mireuksan. Summer is hot and humid, so plan sea trips in the morning and cafes at midday. Winter is oyster season, quieter and colder, with sharp sea winds at the waterfront. Prices, hours and ferry times change, so check them close to your travel date.
