Hwangsaebawi Holy Ground 황새바위성지
Gongju · Gongsanseong & Jemincheon Old Town · Sights
This is a Catholic memorial park on a rocky bluff above the river, where believers were executed in the late Joseon period when the faith was banned. The site has been laid out as a landscaped garden with paths, stone markers, a chapel and small statues, and it is run with care. Visitors of any belief are welcome as long as they keep quiet.
The stone bluff itself, named for a large rock that resembled a stork's perch, looks out over the Geum River, so the setting is calming. It rarely draws a crowd, which makes it an easy extra stop for a walker who wants some silence between larger sights.
Walk about ten minutes from Gongsanseong's west side or take a short taxi ride from the old town. There is a small lot on site. (Show a driver: 황새바위성지)
