Gongsanseong Fortress 공산성
Gongju · Gongsanseong & Jemincheon Old Town · Sights

This hillside fortress above the Geum River was the royal citadel of Ungjin, the Baekje capital from 475 to 538, and it is the anchor of any Gongju visit. A wall of roughly 2.6 km follows the ridge, part earthen and part stone, and the walk along it gives you the river, the bridge and the modern city on the far bank. Inside you will find the foundations of a presumed palace, a lotus pond, the small Ssangsujeong pavilion and Yeongeunsa temple.
Some stretches climb steadily and a few lack railings, so wear sturdy shoes. Entry costs a few thousand won and the hours shift by season, so confirm at the ticket window.
From Gongju Intercity Bus Terminal it is about a 20-minute walk across Geumgang Bridge, or a short taxi ride. City buses stop near Sanseong Market, five minutes on foot from the west gate, and a paid lot sits at the gate. (Show a driver: 공산성)
