Naganeupseong is a fortified county town dating back centuries, with a stone wall wrapped around thatched-roof houses, a magistrate's office and small shops. Unlike most heritage sites, around a hundred households are said to live inside, so you will see laundry, vegetable plots and neighbors going about their day. You can walk along the top of the wall for views over the roofs and rice fields, then drop into craft workshops or a village eatery.

Some houses offer overnight stays in traditional style. There are cultural performances on some days, but the schedule changes. Wear sturdy walking shoes, since the lanes are stony.

Getting there

From Suncheon, buses to Nagan run infrequently, and a taxi takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Ask your hotel to arrange a return taxi, since cars are scarce in the village. (Show a driver: 낙안읍성)
