A broad, free lawn next to the National Garden, this plaza is a relaxed spot to unwind without buying a ticket. Children run on the grass, families lay out picnic mats and the central fountain puts on a music-and-water show during its scheduled seasons, usually in the evening. Because entry is open, it is a useful place to wait for a friend or let kids burn off energy before or after the paid sites.
The plaza has little shade, so it is best on mild afternoons or at dusk. Shows and hours vary by season, and the fountain may be switched off in winter or bad weather. A leashed dog is generally fine on the lawn, but check posted signs.
