Bulil-am Hermitage 송광사 불일암
Suncheon · Jogyesan, Songgwangsa & Seonamsa · Sights
A small hermitage deep in the forest above Songgwangsa, associated with the monk Beopjeong, whose essays on simple living are widely loved in Korea. The path climbs about twenty minutes through trees, with stone steps and dirt trail in places. The hermitage itself is modest, with a few buildings and a garden, and the atmosphere is hushed.
It is a working place of practice, so keep your voice low and respect any signs about closed areas. Opening may be limited, and access rules can change, so check with the temple. Sturdy shoes help, and the trail can be slippery after rain.
A walking path leaves from Songgwangsa and takes around 20 minutes uphill. There is no separate parking. Use the Songgwangsa car park. (Show a driver: 송광사 불일암)
