Gwanghwamun Square is a broad plaza in front of Gyeongbokgung, with statues of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and King Sejong the Great and an underground exhibition on both men. From the south end, steps lead down to Cheonggyecheon, a restored stream that runs through the city center. A walk along the water is cool in summer and quiet in the evening, with lights and stone bridges along the route.

The stream stretches for kilometers, so you can choose your own distance and exit at a street stair when you tire. It is a good place for a post-dinner stroll, and seasonal festivals light up the water. Events change each year, so check dates before planning.

Getting there

Gwanghwamun Station (광화문역), Line 5, Exit 8 or 9, opens onto the plaza. For the stream start, walk south to the stairs by Cheonggye Plaza.
