This free city museum traces how Seoul grew from a Joseon-era capital to a modern metropolis, using photographs, maps, objects and large models. Its most popular display is a huge scale model of old Seoul that visitors can walk around, and it appeals to children and older adults alike. Exhibits show everyday life, from storefronts to school desks, and some sections focus on the rapid growth of the twentieth century.

English information is available in the main galleries, and an audio guide may be offered. Special exhibitions may have a fee. Opening days and hours may change, and it closes one weekday each week.

Getting there

Gwanghwamun Station (광화문역), Line 5 Exit 7, is about ten minutes away. Seodaemun Station (서대문역) is also close.
