Ojangdong Heungnamjip 오장동흥남집
Seoul · Dongdaemun & Euljiro · Meal
Heungnamjip serves Hamhung-style cold noodles, a different regional style from the Pyongyang version. The noodles are made from sweet potato starch, so they are springy, and they are mixed with a spicy red sauce, topped with raw fish or beef, then eaten after pouring in a little broth. The result is chewy, sharp and sweet at once.
The room is simple and old, and service is brisk. Because the flavor is strong, it can be too hot for some visitors, so ask for less spice if you prefer it mild. Raw fish toppings appear on some menus, so check what you are ordering.
Lunch is the busy time, and it may close on certain days. Hours may change.
Euljiro 4-ga Station (을지로4가역), Lines 2 and 5, or Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (동대문역사문화공원역), both within a short walk.
