Heunginjimun is the old eastern gate of the Seoul city wall, and it is commonly known as Dongdaemun, or Great East Gate. It is unusual among the gates because of an extra half-moon wall in front that protects the entrance, and its two-story wooden roof looks sharp against the surrounding towers. The gate is closed to walking through, so you admire it from the roundabout and the footbridges.

The gate is lit at night, and the view from the pedestrian bridge across the street is the favorite angle for photographers. Maintenance work may restrict access.

Getting there

Dongdaemun Station (동대문역), Lines 1 and 4, is beside the gate. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (동대문역사문화공원역) is a short walk away.
