Hyeondeungsa Temple 현등사
Gapyeong · Jojong, Hyeonri & Myeongjisan · Sights

A mountain temple on the slopes of Unaksan, reached by a steep climb from the road that rewards you with quiet courtyards, old stone work and a forest backdrop that is especially vivid in fall. It is a working temple, so walk quietly, avoid entering when chanting is under way and dress modestly. The ascent is demanding enough that sneakers are strongly advised, and the path can be slippery after rain.
Entry is free. English signs are limited, so a translation app helps with the notices. Allow around an hour for the full walk and visit.
Drive up the temple road in Jojong-myeon to the upper car park and walk the rest; taxis from Hyeonri town take about 15 minutes. (Show a driver: 현등사)
