Tongyeong Lacquer Art Museum 통영옻칠미술관
Tongyeong · Yi Sun-sin Park & Hansando · Museums & exhibits
This museum collects works in lacquerware and mother-of-pearl inlay, crafts for which Tongyeong has long been famous. Seeing how thin shell pieces are set into black or red lacquer helps explain why the city is called a craft town. The galleries are quiet and compact, so an hour is plenty, and the entrance fee is modest.
It is closed on Mondays, and times may change, so check before visiting. Labels are mostly Korean, so using a translation app can help, and staff may allow photography in selected rooms. The museum is a calm break from the sea views and fits well with a visit to the nearby park.
It is less suited to restless young children.
It is north of the old town, about 10 minutes by taxi from the bus terminal. (Show a driver: 통영옻칠미술관)
