Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel 통영해저터널
Tongyeong · Mireuk Island & Cable Car · Sights
Opened in 1932, this tunnel under a narrow strait is often described as the first undersea road tunnel in Asia. Today it is walking-only and about 470 meters long, taking roughly five minutes to cross, and the interior has a few displays and a calm, slightly damp atmosphere. Entry is free.
It links the old town side with Mireuk Island, so it is a handy shortcut for people on foot. Plaques outside explain the history, though English may be limited. The nearby shore also has views of fishing boats and a coastal path.
It is lit and safe at night, but keep belongings close, and bring a light jacket since it is cool inside.
It links the old town to Mireuk Island, about 10 minutes by taxi from the bus terminal; the entrance has parking nearby. (Show a driver: 통영해저터널)
