Jeonju Hyanggyo (Confucian School) 전주향교
Jeonju · Hanok Village · Sights
Jeonju Hyanggyo was the provincial Confucian school where local students studied classics and performed rites in honor of sages. Today it is a peaceful complex of tiled halls and lecture buildings that rarely sees crowds, which makes it a refreshing change from the busy lanes nearby. Its most famous residents are the giant ginkgo trees in the courtyard, said to be several centuries old; in early November their leaves turn bright yellow and carpet the ground.
Visitors can wander freely and read signs about Confucian ritual, though not all panels may be translated. Entry has been free recently, but policies may change.
The school lies at the eastern edge of the Hanok Village, roughly a ten-minute walk from Gyeonggijeon Shrine along the road beside the stream. A city bus to the Hanok Village is the easiest transit link. (Show a driver: 전주향교)
