Seongsan Ilchulbong 성산일출봉
Jeju · Seongsan & Seopjikoji · Sights
A volcanic tuff cone that rose from the sea in an underwater eruption, forming a crown-like crater about 180 meters tall. Part of Jeju's UNESCO World Natural Heritage listing, it is the iconic image of the island's east. A stepped path leads to the rim, taking around 25 minutes each way, and the climb is steep but straightforward.
At the top, the crater is a bowl of grass surrounded by jagged ridges. Sunrise is the famous moment, though the peak itself can be crowded, so many travelers watch from Gwangchigi Beach instead. An entrance fee is charged; hours and prices may change.
It is about 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Jeju Airport, with a large parking lot at the base. Buses on the east route stop at Seongsan. (Show a driver: 성산일출봉)
