Gyesan Cathedral 계산성당
Daegu · Jung-gu Old Downtown · Sights
The twin-spired red-brick church on the hill is the seat of Daegu's Catholic archdiocese and one of the oldest Western-style buildings in the southeast of the country. It was completed in the early 1900s in Gothic Revival style, after an earlier hanok-style church burned down, and its pointed towers and stained glass look oddly at home against a city of apartment blocks. It is a working church, so keep your voice low, avoid walking inside during Mass, and photograph the facade and garden from outside.
Early morning light turns the brick a warm orange, and the pavement path to Cheongnara Hill is lined with old trees.
Take Subway Line 2 or 3 to Cheongnaknyeok (Cheongnara Hill) Station and walk about five minutes downhill. There is little visitor parking at the church, so use the public lots nearby. (Show a driver: 계산성당)
