Daecheon Beach — Boryeong Daecheon Beach & Daecheon Port
Photo: Korea Tourism Organization (KOGL)

Daecheon Beach is the signature beach of Korea's west coast, a gently sloping strip of pale shell sand several kilometers long. The water stays shallow far from shore, which makes it comfortable for children, and the long promenade behind the sand is lined with grill restaurants, convenience stores and cafes. Swimming is open in summer, when the Boryeong Mud Festival, usually held in July, fills the north end with mud pools and music.

Outside the season the beach turns calm, with walkers, kite flyers and fishermen. Rent a beach chair or just sit on the sand for the sunset, which is the best free show in town.

Getting there

From Daecheon Station take a taxi (about 15 to 20 minutes) or a local bus toward the beach. If you drive, use the public lots along the seafront road, which fill early on summer weekends. (Show a driver: 대천해수욕장)

Best time to visit
Late June to August for swimming and the mud festival, or a weekday evening in May or September for sunsets without the crowds.
Pair it with
Boryeong Mud Theme Park and Daecheon Beach Sky Bike are a few minutes away on foot, and Coral Coffee is handy for a coffee.
Great for
Couples, Friends, Families with kids
Local tip
The sand here is made of finely crushed shell, so it does not cling to your feet and washes off easily. Around sunset many people gather near the Mud Square end of the beach to watch the sun drop into the sea.
