Chehwajeong Pavilion — Andong Hahoe Village & Byeongsan Seowon
Photo: Korea Tourism Organization (KOGL)

Small enough to see in twenty minutes, this pavilion is designated a Treasure for its fine carpentry. It was built in the 1700s by a scholar honoring brotherly bonds, and the name, taken from a classical poem, refers to that affection. In front lies a square pond with a little island, reflecting the ideal of an immortals' garden.

The best time is midsummer, when old crape myrtles around the pond flower in deep pink. The site is right beside the road, so it is easy to stop on the way to or from Hahoe. Entry is free and there is little shade, so bring a hat in summer.

Getting there

It lies in Pungsan, on the route between Andong and Hahoe, around 25 minutes by car from the old town; ask the driver to wait. (Show a driver: 체화정)
