Sitting under a river cliff, this academy honors Ryu Seong-ryong, the chief minister during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s. It joined the UNESCO list in 2019 as part of the group called Seowon, Neo-Confucian Academies of Korea. People praise it for Mandaeru, a long open pavilion whose posts frame the cliff and the river sandbar like a painting.

The buildings follow a clear axis and use plain, honest timber. Climbing onto the pavilion may be limited for preservation, so follow signs. In July and August crape myrtle trees add pink color to the courtyard.

Allow about seventy minutes. Entry is free, and public transport is poor.

Getting there

It is 15 minutes by car from Hahoe, along a narrow riverside lane at the end; by taxi from Andong allow about 45 minutes. Buses are rare. (Show a driver: 병산서원)
