Andong's signature dish, a soy-braised chicken stew with potatoes, glass noodles and dried chilies, is said to have been born in the lanes of the old market. Beonyeong-gil, now called Jjimdak Alley, holds roughly thirty restaurants that look alike outside, and each tunes the sweetness and heat a little differently. A half portion plus two bowls of rice fills two people, and a whole chicken suits three or four.

Say 'mild' if you dislike spice, and let the pot simmer at the table before you dig in. Many travelers finish by mixing rice into the leftover sauce. Posted prices change from year to year, so read the board outside first.

Getting there

From Andong Station (KTX) or Andong Bus Terminal take a city bus or taxi to the old market, about 15 minutes. Ask for Gu-sijang. (Show a driver: 안동구시장 찜닭골목)
