Dongpirang is a hillside neighborhood above the harbor whose old rooftops and garden walls are covered in painted murals. It was once slated for redevelopment, but a mural project turned it into the symbol of Tongyeong. Climb the stairs past tiny courtyards, laundry lines and sleeping cats, then reach the pavilion near the top for a view over the fishing boats and the islands beyond.

Murals are repainted every few years. People still live here, so keep your voice down and stay on the lanes. The steep steps are tiring in summer heat, which is why mornings work best.

Getting there

It is a 5-minute walk uphill from Gangguan Harbor; the lanes are too narrow for cars, so park in a public lot nearby. (Show a driver: 동피랑벽화마을)

Best time to visit
Early morning or late afternoon, when the lanes are quiet and the light is soft.
Pair it with
Gangguan Harbor and Tongyeong Central Traditional Market are at the foot of the hill, and Nammangsan Sculpture Park continues on the south side.
Great for
Couples, Friends, Solo travelers
Local tip
The village is a climb up many steps, so expect a workout. Visiting early in the morning gives you cleaner photos with fewer people in the lanes.
