Tucked inside Central Park and opened only in recent years, this museum is devoted to the history of writing. The building, shaped like an unrolled scroll, leads visitors down into galleries that trace scripts from ancient clay tablets and hieroglyph-style signs to the invention of Hangul. Interactive displays let you try writing characters or see how scripts are related.

Exhibits include some English text, and the layout is easy to follow even without much language. Budget roughly ninety minutes inside. Admission has been free, but opening days and special exhibitions may change, and it is closed on Mondays.
