This national museum covers the history and culture of Gangwon Province, from prehistoric remains to Joseon-period pieces. Its most distinctive display is the collection of expressive stone arhat figures from the Changnyeongsa site, whose rough faces carry smiles, frowns and sleepy looks that make them memorable even if you know little about Korean Buddhism. Galleries are quiet and well air-conditioned, which makes it a comfortable choice in hot, cold or rainy weather.

Admission to the permanent exhibition is free, though special exhibitions may charge. English labels are available for many items, and an audio guide may be offered.

Getting there

From Namchuncheon Station, take a bus or taxi for about 10 minutes. A large free parking lot is on site. (Show a driver: 국립춘천박물관)
