Namdaemun Market is Seoul's largest traditional market, laid out in lanes by product type. You will find clothing, kitchenware, ginseng, stationery, camera gear and imported goods, along with food counters that serve pots of braised hairtail and bowls of hand-cut noodles. The place has an old-school energy that feels a world apart from the polished malls nearby, and shopkeepers often bargain a little if you buy several items.

Many stalls take cards, though small sellers may prefer cash. Opening times differ by shop and may change.

Getting there

Hoehyeon Station (회현역), Line 4 Exit 5, is next to the market. Seoul Station (서울역) is a ten-minute walk to the north.
