Seongyojang Estate 선교장
Gangneung · Gyeongpo & Chodang · Sights
One of the largest surviving mansions of a Joseon-era noble family, Seongyojang has been lived in by the same lineage for centuries. The grounds hold more than a hundred rooms, an elegant guest wing and a lotus pond with a thatched pavilion that makes the best photograph. Wandering the courtyards gives you a sense of how an aristocratic household worked, from the men's quarters to the women's wing and storehouses.
Some visitors stay overnight in guest rooms or try a tea session, so ask at the ticket office. Check the current admission fee and visiting hours on arrival, as both can be adjusted.
From Gangneung Station (강릉역) take a taxi for about 15 minutes, or ride a local bus to the Seongyojang stop. Parking is available in front of the entrance.
