Jeolla is the southwestern part of Korea, with a reputation for the country's best food, and Korea Trip Map currently covers one place here: Jeonju. The city is known for its hanok village, with hundreds of traditional tile-roofed houses, as well as for bibimbap, makgeolli bars and a historic shrine and cathedral. It is a pleasant place to slow down, with narrow lanes, craft shops, small museums and long meals. Other cities in the region are not yet on this site.
Jeonju is reachable from Seoul by fast train in roughly one and a half to two hours, which makes it feasible as a day trip or an overnight stay. We recommend staying a night. The village is busy during the day with visitors in hanbok, and quieter in the morning and evening, when the lanes and the food stalls feel more local.
A good plan is to arrive by late morning, eat a big bibimbap lunch, walk the hanok lanes and visit the shrine and cathedral, then try makgeolli with a full table of side dishes in the evening. Because Jeonju is not on a subway line, expect to walk, use buses or take short taxi rides. Check opening hours and prices before you go, as they change.
